Tenoch Huerta Meja, who plays subaquatic villain Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, paid a visit to fans on Friday at the Brazilian Comic-Con Experience (CCXP22).

During both interviews, the Mexican actor discussed representation, what it was like to be a newcomer to Marvel, and what the future holds for his character.

Huerta Mejia spoke extensively about the impact that diverse actors are having during the interviews, emphasizing how crucial this is for the coming generation.

Because there aren’t many people of colour on Mexican television, and because he didn’t see himself represented as a child, the actor admitted that he never imagined he’d get this far.

In fact, Huerta Meja didn’t believe he deserved the title even after making a living as an actor (and wrestler).

Only after watching the 2011 sports drama Das de Gracia, which received a 15-minute standing ovation at the Cannes International Film Festival, did he realise that he actually did deserve it.

Since Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has made nearly $700 million at the box office in just under a month since its debut, he believes that the scene is changing. He said that this ought to let producers and studios know that “melanin sells too.”

Huerta Meja also addressed one of Black Panther 2’s most talked-about relationships. If you saw the movie, you probably noticed Namor and Shuri have an undeniable chemistry (Letitia Wright).

While discussing the film, the interviewer asked Huerta if he believed that if Namor and Shuri got together, all of the issues in the film would be resolved, to which Huerta replied, “everything can be solved with a kiss and a hug.”

The actor also praised Ryan Coogler’s work in creating a layered villain who isn’t just pure evil, but rather a character with a legitimate motivation.

Huerta Meja enjoys the fact that the audience gets to choose whether Namor is a villain or not. He also stated that it’s easy to understand Namor’s point of view, because anyone in his position would stand up to defend their people as well.

Namor decides to wage war against Americans after they discover the rare metal vibranium in Talokan, an underwater kingdom inspired by Mesoamerican culture and history.

Last but not least, Huerta Meja reveals that he knows just as much as we do about Namor’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

He joked that questions about Namor’s future should be directed to either Kevin Feige or Mickey Mouse. However, Namor is known in Marvel comic books for having a relationship with Sue Storm, one of the Fantastic Four.

And, given that a new film starring the group of superheroes is on the way, perhaps we’ll get to see Namor again. For the time being, we can only speculate and cross our fingers.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is currently in theatres.
