The late Queen always liked being outside and definitely liked having her own space and privacy. At the same time, the monarch became well-known for both her great sense of humour and the fact that she secretly liked it when things went wrong.

You might think that the Queen wouldn’t have any funny public encounters while she’s on vacation, but her former Protection Officer told of an amazing one.

The Queen moved the royal family to Balmoral Castle every summer, where she lived from July to September. There, some of the king’s favourite things to do were to go for walks, hunt, and ride ponies.

But one year, the monarch managed to stay hidden from a group of American tourists. When one of them asked her if she’d met the Queen, she had a great answer.

People were used to seeing the late Queen wearing brightly coloured hats and coats, but she could blend into the background when she wasn’t in the right setting.

And that’s exactly what happened when a group of American tourists didn’t know it and saw the Queen walking around the estate with an undercover police officer.

Richard Griffin, who used to be the late Queen’s Protection Officer, told Sky News, “There were two hikers coming towards us, and the Queen would always stop and say hello.” It was two Americans on a walking vacation, and it was clear as soon as we stopped that they didn’t know who the Queen was.

“The American said to the Queen ‘and where do you live?’, she said ‘I live in London but I have a holiday home just the other side of the hills’. And he said ‘how long have you been coming up here?’, and she said ‘ever since I was a little girl, so over 80 years.”

The Americans then said, “You must have met the Queen.” The monarch replied, “No, I haven’t, but Dick here meets her all the time.” Dick is the name of the monarch’s bodyguard.

So the guy asked me, “What’s she like?” and I told him, “She can be very grumpy sometimes, but she has a great sense of humour.”

Richard then said that one of the American tourists had put his arm around his shoulder, given his camera to the Queen, and asked her to take a picture of them with Richard.

The bodyguard added: “I also took a picture of them with the Queen, and neither of us said anything about it. She told me, “I’d love to be a fly on the wall when he shows those photographers to his friends in America.”
