Universal’s action comedy Violent Night collected $2.3 million from foreign markets this past weekend, for a running offshore total of $20 million.

The movie has earned about $35 million domestically and $55 million worldwide after earning about $5 million this weekend at domestic box offices.

That’s a good showing for a movie that reportedly cost $20 million to make and was specifically made to serve as a counterpoint to the blockbuster films Avatar: The Way of Water and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The movie, which stars David Harbour as a Santa Claus with Viking influences, scored a strong B+ CinemaScore from viewers on opening day, which undoubtedly helped it run well at the box office for more than two weeks at this point.

In 46 nations, the movie has outperformed rival Universal action comedy Nobody, most recently doing so in Germany and France. Nobody, the John Wick-inspired film series starring Bob Odenkirk, finished its global run with over $57 million against a rumored $16 million budget. It should be mentioned that the movie came out during a riskier period for theatres last year due to the pandemic.

In a few days, Violent Night will surpass Nobody’s worldwide take, and it should end up earning a tidy sum of money for Universal.

The movie has all the makings of a future cult classic, therefore the company made the right choice to distribute it in theatres. We look forward to its digital release.

According to Marco Vito Oddo, who praised the movie’s darkly comic tone, “Despite an uneven rhythm caused by its mix of ultraviolence and sentimental Christmas messages, Violent Night is still a solid holiday flick with the potential to spawn a new franchise.”

Tommy Wirkola, who is perhaps best known for helming the two Dead Snow movies, is the director of Violent Night. With the critically panned but commercially successful Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, starring Gemma Arterton and Jeremy Renner, he made his Hollywood debut.

All things considered, Violent Night may prove to be a useful insurance plan for Harbour following the conclusion of Stranger Things. Harbour’s last attempt to establish a franchise with the Hellboy revival was unsuccessful.

The mercenaries’ leader, Scrooge, is played by John Leguizamo (John Wick); Jason Lightstone is played by Alex Hassell (Cowboy Bebop); Linda, Jason’s estranged wife, is played by Alexis Louder (The Tomorrow War); and Trudy, their daughter, is played by Leah Brady (The Umbrella Academy).

Trudy develops an emotional bond with Santa and helps him out greatly as he tries to get rid of the Alva Lightstone is portrayed by Edi Patterson from “The Righteous Gemstones,” Morgan Lightstone by Cam Gigandet from “Without Remorse,” and Gertrude, the ruthless matriarch of the Lightstone family, is portrayed by Beverly D’Angelo from “National Lampoon’s Vacation.”

You can read the official plot summary for the movie below:

When a team of mercenaries breaks into a wealthy Lightstone family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone inside hostage, the team isn’t prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus (David Harbour, Black Widow, Stranger Things series) is on the grounds, and he’s about to show why this Nick is no saint.
