After a little more than three weeks of release, Disney’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has surpassed the $700 million mark at the global box office.

The movie, which has now dominated the domestic box office for four weekends in a row, has taken in $733 million worldwide after earning nearly $394 million domestically and an additional $339 million from foreign markets.

Comparatively, the first Black Panther had amassed more than $560 million in domestic revenue at that time. Black Panther, a film that has become a cultural touchstone in many ways, ended its domestic run with $700 million, the sixth-highest domestic total of all time, and its global run with $1.3 billion.

Though it won’t reach those sums, Thor: Love and Thunder, a fellow 2022 Marvel release that earned $343 million domestically and 760 million internationally, will undoubtedly be surpassed by Wakanda Forever in the coming days.

At this point, it’s unclear whether the movie will surpass Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ $955 million worldwide gross.

Importantly, Wakanda Forever isn’t screening in China or Russia, where the first movie’s combined box office earnings exceeded $120 million.

The first Black Panther not only broke new ground at the box office, but it also earned Marvel Studios its first-ever Best Picture nomination at the Oscars.

Wakanda Forever has already outperformed The Incredible Hulk ($265 million), Captain America: The First Avenger ($370 million), Eternals ($402 million), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($432 million), Thor ($449 million), and Ant-Man ($518 million) at the worldwide box office, according to internal rankings for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In terms of global box office, the sequel has also outperformed the first Iron Man ($585 million), Iron Man 2 ($621 million), Ant-Man and the Wasp ($623 million), Thor: The Dark World ($644 million), Doctor Strange ($676 million), and Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($714 million).

However, that movie was released day-and-date on the Disney+ streaming service for a premium access fee. Black Widow made $379 million worldwide last year.

The production of Wakanda Forever was unusually turbulent. When actor Chadwick Boseman tragically passed away in 2020, director Ryan Coogler and his co-writer Joe Robert Cole were just about to finish the script.

Boseman had been secretly fighting cancer for four years, and as a result, the movie was changed to pay homage to both him and his well-known character, King T’Challa.
