Eddie Murphy jokes about Will Smith while receiving GG’23

Eddi Murphy at the conclusion of his speech, Murphy shocked the audience with a joke about the 2014 Academy Awards and the time Will Smith hit Chris Rock on stage over a remark about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Murphy began his address by praising his partner Paige Butcher and his 10 “wonderful” children. “I have been in show business for 46 years, and I have been in the movie business for 41 years, so this has been a long time in the making and very appreciated,” he said.

Added he, “I could literally stand up here and keep naming people till they start playing the piano because I have been doing this for a very long time, but I am going to stop and just say something to all the fresh up-and-coming dreamers and artists in the room tonight. I want you to know that there is a clear path you can take to success, wealth, longevity, and mental tranquilly.”

Murphy then revealed the strategy he had adopted “”It is quite simple, just do these three things,” she said. Pay your taxes, take care of business, and refrain from mentioning the name of Will Smith’s wife!”

Smith apologized to Rock in a video he released on his social media in July. He further addressed the moment on The Daily Show in November. He also resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and was banned from attending its ceremonies for the next 10 years.

In his July video, Smith said, “I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk, and when he is he will reach out. So I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable, and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”
