The entertainment industries of India and Pakistan are suffering more than ever from their long-standing rivalry.

When tensions between the neighbouring states were beginning to ease, the 2016 Uri attack led to an unofficial moratorium on screening projects from either side. Mahira Khan, Pakistan’s leading actress, is calling a spade a spade while many Lollywood and B-town celebrities avoid talking about the issue.

The 38-year-old actress went into great length about the causes behind the inevitable bans by each industry in a recent interview with Variety magazine.

Khan made his Bollywood debut in Raees alongside Shah Rukh Khan. The Bol actress reflected on her time and work experience there and said, “I had the most incredible time working in India. There is a lot of love among the many folks I am still in contact with. Unfortunately, whether we are in Pakistan or they are in India, we are both vulnerable targets and easy prey. It’s unfortunate that it’s political and not personal. We will always be that on both ends until scapegoats are required.

The well-known actress from Humsafar admitted, “I still communicate with a lot of people, and there is a lot of affection there. Unfortunately, whether we are in Pakistan or they are in India, we are both vulnerable targets and easy prey. We genuinely understand one another since we are all artists and are bound together by the commonality of art. Therefore, more than anything, we’re trying to watch out for one another.

The actor of Bin Roye added, “Even today, we are very careful about what we post on social media. It’s not that we don’t communicate with one another. It’s not like we don’t send each other birthday wishes. It’s not like we never cross paths in other nations. It’s only that we are truly safeguarding one other as well as ourselves, not just ourselves.
