Michael Jackson biopic is in the works
Michael, a film based on the life of the King of Pop, will be helmed by Antoine Fuqua.
The biography is being produced by John Branca and John McClain, the co-executors of the Michael Jackson estate, along with Graham King, who worked on the Oscar-winning Freddie Mercury movie “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
The script is being written by “Gladiator” and “The Aviator” author John Logan.
Before his sad death at age 50 in 2009, Michael, a member of the Jackson 5, rose to fame as a child star and eventually became the largest pop performer in the world.
Although Lionsgate claims that the film would cover “all facets” of the music icon’s life, it is unclear how it will handle the numerous Jackson-related controversies given that the star’s estate has defended him from claims of sexually assaulting children.
Lionsgate say that the movie will address “all aspects” of the music icon’s life, although it is unclear how it will deal with the many controversies surrounding Jackson as the star’s estate has defended him against allegations of sexually abusing children.
In a statement, Fuqua said: “The first films of my career were music videos, and I still feel that combining film and music are a deep part of who I am.
“For me, there is no artist with the power, the charisma, and the sheer musical genius of Michael Jackson. I was influenced to make music videos by watching his work – the first Black artist to play in heavy rotation on MTV.
“His music and those images are part of my worldview, and the chance to tell his story on the screen alongside his music was irresistible.”
Recent years have seen a rise in the popularity of music biopics, with “Bohemian Rhapsody” making $910 million worldwide and Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” bringing older audiences back to the movies after the epidemic when it was released last year.
In addition to currently filming “The Equalizer 3” with Denzel Washington, Fuqua previously directed the Will Smith feature “Emancipation.” He has also appeared in the films “Training Day” and “Olympus Has Fallen.”
