Many people’s lives and childhoods have been accompanied by music composed by John Williams. In the soon-to-be-released feature-length documentary directed by Steven Spielberg, a longtime collaborator and friend, people will finally get to know the man behind the music.

Given his 60-year career, Williams is probably one of Hollywood’s most well-known composers. The Accidental Tourist, The Book Thief, Born on the Fourth of July, Far and Away, Home Alone, Memoirs of a Geisha, Jaws, JFK, the first three Harry Potter films, Raiders of the Lost Ark, the Star Wars series, and Superman all have Williams’ scores as their enduring soundtracks.

The soundtracks to Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Adventures of Tintin, The BFG, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., The Fabelmans, Jurassic Park, Lincoln, Munich, The Post, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List, and War Horse were all created through their nearly 50-year partnership.

On January 12, at the American Cinematheque celebration at the Writers Guild of America Theater in Beverly Hills, Spielberg compared his friendship with Williams to the ideal marriage.

Spielberg remarked, “I don’t think we’ve ever had a disagreement. I mean, what am I going to do? myself sit down and compose the music?” Perhaps their long-standing friendship, which will likely be discussed in this documentary along with Williams’ accomplishments, including writing the themes for the 1984, 1988, and 1992 films, is what allows them to create such beautiful music together.

The documentary will be directed by Laurent Bouzereau, who has directed numerous “making of” and “behind-the-scenes” featurettes (many for Spielberg’s films), in addition to Spielberg and Amblin Television leading the project. The project has the support of Nedland Media and Imagine Documentaries as well.

The documentary is still in the planning stages, so no date has been set for its debut. James Mangold’s upcoming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will feature the next musical composition by John Williams, and you can fully experience Williams’ music by listening to a selection of some of his best scores.
