Internet corrects Ben Shapiro hot take on ‘The Last of Us’
Social media users heavily criticised Ben Shapiro's complaint. “The entire episode has...
Despite being adored and praised by the majority of ‘The Last of Us’ fans, the introduction of the love story between characters Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett) has drawn criticism from homophobic viewers that exceeds its fair share.
Bella Ramsey, the star of the show, recently offered her opinion on the matter, telling GQ in an interview that fans, particularly homophobic fans, would have to “get used to it.”
They try their best to represent the queer community in real life by fighting for them the best way they know how, even though Ramsey does not have the same burden as their character Ellie in the series, who might actually be carrying the key to saving the world.
In an interview with GQ about the show’s future, Ramsey suggested that the writers might continue to closely “follow the storyline of the games” and expressed their excitement that Dina, a woman who Ellie’s character has a romantic relationship with in the game’s sequel, might soon join her.
The queer community has always been represented by The Last of Us in both video games and television shows. For example, Ellie admitted in the game that she doesn’t really like men.
Of course, in the gaming world, that was a huge accomplishment. But Dina, Bill, Frank, and Lev—a trans character introduced in The Last of Us Part II—show that The Last of Us (whether in games or on television) has always been and will always be queer.
As a result, Ellie is not the only transgender character in the game. Ramsey is “not particularly anxious about it,” despite the possibility that this fact alone will cause more controversy for the programme.
She went on:
“I know people will think what they want to think. But they’re gonna have to get used to it. If you don’t want to watch the show because it has gay storylines, because it has a trans character, that’s on you, and you’re missing out. It isn’t gonna make me afraid. I think that comes from a place of defiance.”
Ramsey previously revealed in a New York Times interview that she identifies as non-binary and prefers to use pronouns like “she/her” and “they/them” instead of “they.”
Ramsey enjoys being a part of The Last of Us, despite the controversy the series has faced over its portrayal of queer people.
They added, “But I would honestly do this for years,” saying, “Signing on to a series is such a risk, because if I hate this, then I’m potentially tied into it for years. I didn’t want to be tied into something I didn’t enjoy.”
Ellie (Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl who might be humanity’s last hope, is hired to be smuggled out of a quarantine zone by Joel (Pedro Pascal), a grizzled survivor in the video game The Last of Us.
But what begins as a job soon transforms into a heartbreaking journey as they must rely on one another to survive while navigating the now-fungus-infected United States.
Along with Gabriel Luna, Merle Dandridge, Lamar Johnson, Melanie Lynskey, Keivonn Woodard, Jeffrey Pierce, John Getz, Samuel Hoeksema, Olivier Ross-Parent, and Graham Greene, other cast members include Ramsey, Pascal, Offerman, and Bartlett.
Every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, HBO and HBO Max broadcast The Last of Us.
