The daytime television era has come to an end.

When the current season of Dr. Phil comes to an end later this year, E! News proves it.

The daytime talk show, which debuted in September 2002 and was hosted by Dr. Phil McGraw, has been in syndication for 21 seasons.

On January 31, McGraw released a statement stating, “I have been blessed with over 25 wonderful years in daytime television.” We have assisted thousands of guests and millions of viewers with issues ranging from addiction and marriage to mental health and child rearing on this show. While I’m moving on from daytime, there is so much more I would like to do. This has been an incredible chapter in both my life and career.

Nearly a year after the show was accused of mistreating staff members on set, Dr. Phil’s swan song has been announced. Buzzfeed News published a report in February 2022 that cited a number of former and current Dr. Phil staff members who described their workplace experiences of verbal abuse, fear, and intimidation.

None of the employees, most of whom spoke to the outlet anonymously, claimed to have witnessed McGraw engaging in the particular behavior; however, they did make allegations regarding a toxic work environment.

Separate declarations to E! At the time, McGraw and the show’s representatives denied the allegations, describing the report as a “clickbait story.”

McGraw made his television debut as a regular guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show in April 1998. When Oprah Winfrey hired McGraw’s legal consulting firm to help her prepare for her 1998 libel trial involving a group of Texas cattlemen as a result of her comments about mad cow disease on an episode of her talk show, they became friends.

Dr. Phil was launched under Winfrey’s Harpo Productions umbrella to assist Phil in building his own daytime empire after becoming a fan favorite on her show.
