LONDON: Under-pressure Graham Potter, the manager of struggling Chelsea, argues that the issues affecting his squad were present long before he arrived at Stamford Bridge.

Prior to Sunday’s London derby at Tottenham, Chelsea is mired in 10th place in the Premier League, 23 points behind the league’s top-place Arsenal.

During the January transfer window, Potter, who was hired as Chelsea’s manager in September, spent more than £315 million ($376 million).

Nonetheless, the new look Despite losing 1-0 to bottom-of-the-table Southampton last weekend, Chelsea, with Potter taking the brunt of jeers from angry supporters amid growing rumours that he would be fired, nonetheless suffered a defeat.

Potter, the former manager of Brighton, is sure that he is still working to find solutions to problems that date back far before he was hired, all the while integrating his fresh crop of young players.

It’s incredibly difficult. The hardest position in football, I’ve claimed. There are other contributing elements, Potter told reporters on Friday.

“The club made significant financial investments in the team, which adds to the pressure, expectation, and noise.

“But the players we have are hardly 400-game Premier League veterans who are 28 years old. These are inexperienced players who require time to adjust.

Less than seven weeks after the team’s return from its US tour, Chelsea fired Thomas Tuchel.

After a humiliating friendly loss to Arsenal, Tuchel publicly questioned the players’ professionalism.

Todd Boehly, Chelsea’s new co-owner, quickly lost faith in the German, despite the fact that the manager had just won the Champions League.

Speaking to our seasoned players, they remarked that our subpar preseason was the worst they had ever encountered.

“No one is to blame for this. That took place. The tour’s organizational efficiency fell short of their expectations.

“I’m unsure because I wasn’t there. Old players went, and new players entered after the manager changed.

“Then I appear in the middle of a Champions League match that is taking place Saturday-Tuesday. During that time, we experienced the most unusual accident circumstance.”

Chelsea has only won twice in their past 14 games and has only scored once at home in 2023, so Potter is aware that the fans won’t be sympathetic to the team’s struggles.

He said, “I don’t think anybody is genuinely bothered. “That is the reality. because I am Chelsea’s manager. Since four months ago, I’ve been asked about pressure. You must accept the outcomes as they are.

“It’s acceptable for supporters to be irate. My argument is that there are a number of variables that have led to that outcome (against Southampton).

“No, I’m not here to persuade them (with words). My activities must persuade them. We must triumph in games. I have nothing to add.”
