Celebrities including Priyanka Chopra, Mindy Kaling, Nick Jonas, Preity Zinta, Jacqueline Fernandez, and others gathered on March 9 for the second annual South Asian Excellence at the Oscars event at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles to honor nominees from films like RRR, All That Breathes, and The Elephant Whisperers. On Friday, Mindy posted pictures of herself and other celebrities from the “special event” on Instagram. She posed with Telugu actor Jr. NTR in one of the photos as Preity photobombed their image.

The pre-Oscars party was co-chaired by Malala Yousafzai, Mindy Kaling, Kumail Nanjiani, Kal Penn, Aziz Ansari, Bela Bajaria, Radhika Jones, Joseph Patel, Shruti Ganguly, and Anita Chatterjee. It was hosted by Priyanka Chopra and celebrity manager-entrepreneur Anjula Acharia. Many of the celebrities who walked the red carpet for the occasion were dressed by Falguni and Shane Peacock designers.

Posting photos from the pre-Oscars party, Mindy captioned them as follows: “I had the honor of co-hosting a celebration of South Asian Oscar candidates last night. I made a ton of new friends, gave hugs to old ones, and was moved by the artistic brilliance I saw all around me. Falguni and Shane Peacock created the most amazing saree for me, and @sethicouture lent me practically the entire world’s worth of diamonds. We appreciate Priyanka Chopra and Anjula Acharia’s efforts in organizing such a memorable occasion. I really enjoy going on dates with @asekar95 because we get to do the most Indian thing imaginable before getting Taco Bell.” Ike Barinholtz, an actor, responded to her post: “Was Jr. NTR curious about me? Would he be interested in perhaps becoming my friend?”

Moreover, Preity took images of herself with the attendees, including Jr. NTR and Jacqueline Fernandez, and posted them to Instagram. “A big congratulations to all the Oscar Nominees I met last night,” she wrote in the caption. I’m putting my fingers together for all of you… We appreciate @priyankachopra and @anjula acharia for uniting South Asian artists and recognizing one another’s accomplishments. Such a fantastic evening it was.

At the occasion, Priyanka Chopra also took pictures with Malala Yousafzai, the youngest person to ever win the Nobel Peace Prize. In Joshua Seftel’s Stranger at the Gate, an Oscar nominee for best documentary short, the social activist serves as executive producer. The Hollywood Reporter cited Priyanka as stating, “These are folks whose shoulders we stand on to be able to build this,” on the red carpet. All of these men were hustling and clamoring for representation while no one bowed to them. And as we look around the room, we think, “Here is their chance.

The 95th Academy Awards will take place at the Dolly Theatre in Los Angeles on March 12 (March 13 in India). Three Indian movies are vying for the coveted prizes this year. The songs “Naatu Naatu” by RRR and “All That Breathes” by Shaunak Sen are up for Best Original Songs, “The Elephant Whisperers” by Guneet Monga is up for Best Documentary Short, and “Naatu Naatu” by RRR is up for Best Original Song.
