Aleem Dar, renowned for his remarkable career as an international cricket umpire, initially took to the sport as a batsman during his teenage years. He made a significant shift to umpiring, where his talent and dedication earned him a spot on the global stage. Throughout his career, Dar officiated an impressive 145 Test matches, 231 ODIs, 72 T20s, and 5 WT20s, as reported by ESPN Sports. After a distinguished 19-year career, he retired from the elite panel of umpires in March 2023. Steve Buckner, a celebrated umpire himself, has been a key inspiration for Dar.
Recently, Dar shared a deeply personal and heart-wrenching story in an interview. He opened up about a tragic moment early in his career when he lost his seven-month-old daughter.
“In 2003, while I was umpiring World Cup matches, I was also experiencing the early stages of my career,” Dar revealed. “My daughter passed away during this crucial time, but my family chose not to tell me right away to shield me from the grief as it was such an important period for me.”
Despite his father’s wishes to keep the news private, Dar eventually learned of his daughter’s passing from someone he encountered in Johannesburg. “When I finally spoke to my wife, she was devastated, and I immediately flew back to Pakistan,” Dar recounted.
