The grand premiere of Bigg Boss 18 on Sunday introduced 18 new contestants, ranging from TV actors to social media influencers.
However, the real buzz was about the ’19th contestant’—a donkey named Gadhraj, whose presence in the house sparked mixed reactions from viewers. The unusual inclusion of an animal has now drawn criticism from animal welfare organization PETA India.
On Wednesday, Shaurya Agrawal, an advocacy associate at PETA India, addressed a letter to host Salman Khan, expressing concerns about the donkey’s presence on the show. “We are being inundated with complaints by members of the public who are deeply distressed over the keeping of a donkey in the Bigg Boss house. Their concerns are valid and must not be ignored,” the letter stated.
PETA India urged Salman Khan to use his influence to “surrender the donkey to PETA India, to rehome in a sanctuary with other rescued donkeys.” The organization emphasized that the “use of animals on a show set is no laughing matter” and asked Salman Khan to not use animals as props for entertainment purposes.
Although some viewers found the situation amusing, others questioned the ethics of confining the animal. “The contestants are trapped there with their consent, but the donkey is not,” one viewer commented on Reddit.
