Pakistani actress Hira Soomro recently expressed support for men’s legal right to marry up to four wives, provided they can afford to meet each spouse’s needs.

During a podcast, Soomro voiced her confusion over why women feel hurt when their husbands marry again, pointing out that it’s permitted by law.

“It doesn’t make sense to me,” Soomro said when asked about the emotional impact on the first wife. She emphasized that Pakistan’s laws allow up to four marriages, as long as men have “good intentions” and respect the rights of each spouse.

Soomro further argued that even if there’s no specific justification for multiple marriages, men should still be allowed to marry more than once. “Some men cannot be convinced to remain loyal to one woman,” she remarked, adding that it is better for men to marry again rather than engage in inappropriate activities outside the marriage.

Commenting on modern gender roles, Soomro noted, “Nowadays, women want to do it all. They want to work and have children,” contrasting this with past times when women primarily stayed home. She suggested that women’s pursuit of independence could lead some men to feel neglected, potentially driving them to seek attention elsewhere. “What kind of love is it,” she questioned, “when you force someone into inappropriate activities?”
