Huma Qureshi reflects on being judged for turning into author
Huma Qureshi, known for her acting prowess, has expanded her creative horizons by venturing into writing. After the success of her debut book, Zeba: An Accidental Superhero, she recently announced completing her second book, Dhundh. Reflecting on her journey as an author, Huma shared how writing defies expectations from actors in the film industry.
“It’s not expected from an actor in our industry to do something as intellectual as being an author,” she remarked. However, Huma has never adhered to stereotypes. “I just thought that this is a story I want to tell and put out in the world, so I did it.”
Addressing the prejudices actors face, she noted, “Everyone has some guru mantra for actors—what they should or shouldn’t do. I haven’t asked for those opinions.” For Huma, taking risks is essential. “The bigger problem is not even trying anything different. People spend their entire lives scared to experiment. I might not succeed in everything, but at least I try.”
Huma’s creative pursuits don’t stop at writing. She and her brother, Saqib Saleem, aim to expand their family’s 50-year-old restaurant, Saleem, across India and internationally, taking Indian cuisine to the global stage.
