John Lithgow in talks to play Dumbledore in HBO’s Harry Potter Reboot
The highly anticipated Harry Potter reboot series at HBO is beginning to take shape, with reports suggesting that the show has found its Albus Dumbledore. According to Deadline, veteran actor John Lithgow is in the final stages of negotiations to portray the beloved Hogwarts headmaster.
The publication quoted sources stating that Lithgow, a six-time Emmy-winning actor, “is in final negotiations to portray Professor Albus Dumbledore in HBO‘s adaptation” of Harry Potter. However, HBO has not officially confirmed the news. Addressing the speculation, the network stated, “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumour and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”
The series, helmed by writer/showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director/executive producer Mark Mylod, is set to retell the story of the seven books with an entirely new cast. Designed to run over a decade, it is expected to span seven seasons, with each covering one book.
Originally written by J.K. Rowling, the Harry Potter series has sold over 600 million copies, making it the best-selling book series in history. The Warner Bros film adaptations grossed $7.7 billion worldwide, with Richard Harris and later Michael Gambon portraying Dumbledore in the movies.
