Andrew Garfield once again expressed his willingness to return as Spider-Man—but only under a unique condition. He recently emphasized that he would reprise the role if it aligned with something far more unconventional than the typical creativity seen in superhero films.

At the Middle East Film & Comic Con, Andrew Garfield spoke, according to Entertainment Tonight, Garfield said, “It would have to be very weird. I would like to do something very strange. Something very unique, and offbeat and surprising, kind of like the creative freedom they have with the animated ‘Spider-Verse’ movies.”

Reflecting on his previous departure from Spider-Man, Garfield had earlier told Esquire that he hadn’t closed the door on returning. He explained that any return to the superhero genre would need to align with his artistic inclinations and offer something culturally or emotionally meaningful.

“For sure, I would 100% come back if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into,” he stated to the outlet, adding, “I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return.”

Andrew Garfield, who first suited up in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and reprised the role in its 2014 sequel, delighted fans once again with his appearance in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which earned $1.9 billion worldwide. However, he managed to keep his cameo in No Way Home a secret from both fans and the media.

Nevertheless, he admitted that fans might still doubt his denials about appearing in Spider-Man 4. He told GQ, “I’m gonna disappoint you. Yeah, no. But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.”

Although the film was a commercial success, the actor remains cautious about returning to the role. He stated that it would need to be an unconventional, risk-taking project—something far removed from typical superhero fare.
