Kabir Bedi wasn’t a well-known celebrity in India in the 1970s. Due to the popularity of his Italian TV show Sandokan, the actor was among the most recognisable figures in Europe at the time. Kabir was dating Parveen Babi, another actor, at the time. Kabir recounted a recent conversation in which Parveen complained about being overlooked in favour of her companion when the duo travelled to Italy.

Following the tremendous popularity of the six-part television series Sandokan, which premiered in 1976, a sequel called The Return of Sandokan was released in 1977. Kabir became well-known across the nation because to the television show and movie based on the well-known pirate hero. Parveen was also a well-known actor in India at the time because to roles in blockbusters like Deewar and Amar, Akbar, Anthony.

Talking about their relationship at the Sahitya Aaj Tak 2022, Kabir recalled, “Relationships between stars are difficult. Every star has so much pressure on their time. There are shoots, functions, press demands, and social obligations. And two stars’ schedules clashing leads to tensions. You have to sacrifice a lot. But we never had any problem when we were in India because I knew Parveen is a bigger star than me. I was coming up. It didn’t bother me because I was convinced I was going to be a big star also.”

He did, however, warn that Parveen would have to adjust to not being the “larger celebrity” when they travelled to Italy. But as soon as we arrived in Italy, Parveen began to be marginalised, and I could see that she was resentful of my fame. She didn’t know how to play second fiddle to me. I found myself suddenly the star and she was not. This also made her angry. Add to that the fact that her mental state was worsening gradually,” he continued.

Kabir and Parveen Babi split up in the late 1970s. She was already suffering from a severe mental illness that was subsequently identified as paranoid schizophrenia. Parveen persisted in dismissing the diagnosis as a hoax, nevertheless. Aged 50, she passed away in 2005.
