According to Karan Johar, he would not be able to produce a commercially successful picture with newbies due to the high marketing costs needed to advertise a Bollywood movie nowadays. The director has frequently come under fire for allegedly working with and debuting only famous children in his movies. At a recent engagement, he discussed the business of Hindi films and the reasons why it is pointless to introduce fresh talent to Bollywood.

Over the years, Karan has launched star children like Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, and Ananya Panday through his production company Dharma Production. Ibrahim Ali Khan is working with his father Saif Ali Khan on his return to directing with Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. However, despite the fact that Karan has been charged with encouraging nepotism in the business, several ‘outsiders’ have also appeared in his films, such Sidharth Malhotra, Tara Sutaria, and Vicky Kaushal, to mention a few.
Anurag Kashyap and Karan Johar recently discussed the contrasts between the costs of making movies in Bollywood and the south during a roundtable discussion. Anurag brought out the “controlled marketing strategies” used by south Asian films. Karan added, “And also the costs are lower. They don’t have marketing costs like we have. Today if I want to launch a new talent, a new boy or girl, nobody is going to watch that film. Because we’d have to promote that film so much that how do you recover that PNA (personal networking agency). So the way the marketing goes in other languages, Hindi is ridiculous.”

Karan went on to criticise the marketing strategies utilised by the majority of blockbuster movies today, saying, “Our PNA costs are pointless. They are not serving anybody. By going around in reality shows and visiting malls and going ‘wow 8000 people show up’. But 80 don’t reach the theatre.”
The latest movie Karan directed was Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in 2016. Next year’s Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani will mark his return to directing. Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi all appear in the movie.
