On Sunday, Aaliyah Kashyap posted a link to fundraising for her best friend Ida Ali’s senior thesis movie on her Instagram Stories. Aaliyah received criticism for her privileged behavior from a fellow Instagram user who suggested that Ida’s father, director Imtiaz Ali, could afford to produce the movie instead. The user was then addressed by Aaliyah, who pointed out that if Imtiaz had produced it, they would have called it nepotism and explained how typical it is for film students to request assistance.

Ida has a link to her fundraising page for her senior thesis movie Red in Aaliyah‘s earlier article. She penned, “Hi everyone! My bestie/sister @idaali11 is fundraising for her senior thesis film! It would mean so much if you could contribute any amount.”

According to the Red summary, “A trusting girl peaks the interest of a stalker, leading him to an unexpected place.” Ida is a student of film production at Chapman University’s Dodge College in California. Boundary, Lift, and The Other Woman are three short films she has directed. She also wrote the script for the love story Uljhe Hue on Amazon miniTV, starring Sanjana Sanghi and Abhay Verma.

Following Aaliyah‘s disclosure of the information, an Instagram user commented on her story with the words “The rich asking for money, lol. Irony here is that she’s Imtiaz Ali’s daughter. Your friend’s father has paid for film school. He can definitely produce the film also. Gosh, launching a fundraiser for this is ‘peak’ nincompoopery and privileged behaviour.”

The user was later informed by Aaliyah, the daughter of director Anurag Kashyap and editor Aarti Bajaj, that fundraising events were very popular among film students. In a different Instagram Story, she stated: “Lmao. Firstly it’s extremely common practice for film students to crowd fund for their school films. Literally almost all film students do so, especially for their senior films.”

Said she, “Secondly, if her father produced her movie, then you would have a problem with it and call it nepotism. and now that she’s trying to do it on her own and WANTS to do it own her own that’s also apparently an issue?” Ida would have been accused of nepotism if she had enlisted her father’s assistance in making the movie, but because she is working alone, that is also a problem, Aaliyah defended her friend.
