Despite having a clear idea of the roles she wanted to do when she began her career in film, actor Yami Gautam claims that the “out of sight, out of mind” philosophy led her to make more conventional decisions. Vicky Donor, a 2012 release, marked the actor’s acting debut. She was born in Himachal Pradesh and went on to star in movies like Badlapur and Kaabil. She played several traditional heroine roles in the meantime, but after the 2019 films Bala and Uri: The Surgical Strike, according to her, everything turned for the better.

For me, the awareness was always there right from my first film. When I look back 10 years ago, I auditioned for a film like Vicky Donor, which can sound so different from what it actually was… Even then, I was clear about the kind of films I wanted to associate with.

“But your real journey starts with your second film. It is not about getting success with a particular film, it is about what follows after that and how you sustain that. I think that is a bigger challenge,” Yami told in an interview.

The actor, 34, admitted that as she looked back, she made some choices because she wanted to be noticed. “At the end of the day it is like, ‘out of sight, out of mind’ so you have to do something. If a certain kind of film is coming, you do it. One is like, ‘Okay, let’s do it’. But there’s no fun in it,”  she continued.

According to Yami, she has become into a much more cautious artist and only considers projects based on the screenplay. “I read a script very carefully and make my notes, even for the films that I don’t do. I share it with the director as I feel for the writers. They spend so much time writing, so you owe that respect to them.”

The actor claimed that her mistakes had taught her that there are no “shortcuts”. “Everyone has to go through ups and downs. There is a learning curve that we all have to go through the hard way. Hard way is the best way, there are no shortcuts to anything,” Said she.

Over the years, Yami thinks she has also come to the realisation that the “worst feeling” is being a part of something that doesn’t have her heart. Because I’ve done that in the past and it was the worst sensation, there comes a moment when you grow fearless and feel that sitting at home and waiting is okay rather than doing this.

“You are getting up uninspired and every moment is heavy… So now I look at things that I believe in,” The actor stated that she is awaiting the release of her film Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga and has not yet signed on to any new projects. The movie is marketed as a fast-paced heist-thriller and also stars Sunny Kaushal and Sharad Kelkar. It is produced by Amar Kaushik and Dinesh Vijan of Maddock Productions under the direction of Ajay Singh.

Yami expressed her gratitude to Kaushik and Vijan for giving her yet another intriguing role following the release of their critically acclaimed film Bala. “Amar has given me one of the most important films of my life, Bala. I can’t thank him, Niren (Bhatt, writer) and Dinu (Vijan) for literally resurrecting my career enough,”  she remarked.

“When people didn’t have expectations from me… That time, they gave me such an important role and this time also they did not offer me something just like that,” she added.

The plot of Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga centres on an air hostess named Yami and her businessman beau Sunny who are trying to escape a debt shark’s grasp by stealing gems. As the plane carrying the jewels gets involved in a hostage scenario, the heist goes horribly wrong.

Yami claimed that playing the air hostess Neha helped her develop as a performer. She continued, “This film is an opportunity that is interesting, challenging, entertaining, engaging and allows me to nurture myself as an actor,” On March 24, Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga will become available on Netflix.
