David Gold died at the age of 86.

Gold, who was born in Stepney, played for West Ham’s boys team when he was 13 to 16 years old. After having a successful business career, he became joint-chairman of the Premier League club in 2010.

His fellow co-chairman, David Sullivan, wrote on the club’s website, “On behalf of everyone at the football club, it is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we mourn the death of our colleague and friend, David Gold.”

“Of all the things we did together, nothing made us feel more proud and happy than when we bought our team, West Ham United, in January 2010.”

Sullivan added, “David had a long history with the Hammers. He grew up across the street from the Boleyn Ground in Green Street and played for the club when he was younger.”

“He always wanted what was best for West Ham United, and we all miss him a lot.”

David Moyes, the manager of West Ham, said, “I am very sad to hear this news, and on behalf of all the players and my staff at the training ground, I want to send our deepest condolences to David Gold’s family during this very hard time.”

Mr. Gold was a regular visitor to Rush Green and always encouraged me and the players.

“It was evident he loved the club and was a loyal fan. “He was always willing to aid behind-the-scenes workers. He’ll be missed.”

Gold sold his Birmingham interests in 2009. He became joint chairman of West Ham in January 2010. After a takeover that “steadied the ship and protected the club’s future”

West Ham confirmed Gold died Wednesday after a short illness, with his daughters and fiancée by his side.

Karren Brady worked with Gold at Birmingham. She tweeted, “To a terrific man, a friend for over 30 years, and a gentleman — you will be missed.” “Rest in peace”
