Black Panther: Wakanda Forever would be difficult to watch because Chadwick Boseman will die in 2020. Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole, the co-screenwriters, were forced to change the direction of their narrative in order to emphasize the mourning of the entire country as well as Shuri’s personal sadness. The film was not all depressing, though; Okoye (Danai Gurira) and Shuri (Letitia Wright) shared a sequence that provided light relief and a means of moving the plot along.

Gurira recently spoke with Deadline’s podcast about filming the scene where Okoye and Shuri go to find Riri (Dominique Thorne). During it, they travel to Riri’s school, MIT. They start off by observing Riri from a distance while trying to figure out how to approach her, with Okoye fretting over whether or not she appears to be alright. Finally taking the lead and arriving at Riri’s dorm room is Shuri. However, Okoye uses a little bit of force to further frighten Riri off before Okoye and Shuri finally succeed in using a strategy that convinces Riri to change her mind. When Gurira discussed the moment, she gave the following explanation of the laughs that took place and the latitude the trio was given for the scenario:

“I was laughing so hard and there were a lot of improvements that were happening, that were being allowed, which was funny. I really did love Dominique. Her character was cracking me up for real, so we’re just having a really good time. And Letitia was cracking up for real, so we just added the moment where I look at her and say, “oh, you think it’s funny?” because she wasn’t supposed to be laughing, but she was. It was just a really fun day.”

Following the passing of T’Challa/Black Panther, Wakanda Forever centers on the country as it contends with Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejia) and his underwater realm Talokan as a new threat. Shuri and Okoye come to Riri for assistance because Black Panther is not present to assist them, while Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) looks for Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o). Meanwhile, T’Challa’s death and the subsequent grieving and grief present a challenge for Shuri and Queen Ramonda as they attempt to completely defend Wakanda.

Coogler was the director of Wakanda Forever. Along with them, other actors who appear in it include Winston Duke, Martin Freeman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michaela Coel, Florence Kasumba, and Mabel Cadena.
