Danai Gurira plays Okoye in the first Black Panther film, released in 2018. Okoye was introduced as a member of the Dora Milaje and quickly established herself as a formidable force as she carried out her responsibility to defend Wakanda and the royal family. This basically continues in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but Okoye loses her title and her objective is put in jeopardy after a recruitment mission with Shuri (Letitia Wright) goes wrong.

Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) was enraged at Okoye when Shuri and Riri (Dominque Thorne) were abducted by a small number of Talokanil. The queen demoted Okoye from the Dora because she thought she was no longer capable of carrying out her duties, which had disastrous effects on the warrior. Okoye eventually keeps looking for methods to assist. She even dons a new suit created by Shuri for the final battle, despite her initial strong reluctance to do so. Gurira elaborates on Okoye’s post-credits life in an interview with Deadline, outlining some of her goals for the character.

She reveals that Nate Moore, the producer, and director Ryan Coogler talked about scenes that were cut from the finished picture, including one that featured Okoye, during a press conference at the DGA.

“And then there’s another key one of mine, which is really my character saying bye to Shuri and she just catches her in Haiti unexpectedly, and Shuri’s like, ‘Are you going back to the Dora?’ and my character says no. And she said, ‘Where are you going to go,’ and I was like wherever my blue suit takes me, and she just walks off. And they have a beautiful moment, and then she just walks off. [Coogler] was saying it’s like that kung fu show, where the guy just walked the earth. She just walks off. We don’t know where Okoye’s going. And she’s sort of letting go. She was fighting to keep that position, and then she lets it go. That’s kind of her arc, that she lets go. And we don’t know where that leads to.”

Gurira goes on to say that she would like to delve more into this thread if we ever saw Okoye again. Given that Okoye has only had one main goal during her time in the MCU so far, she describes it as being “very, very thrilling” to her. Gurira is curious to watch Okoye’s progress because she “had been used to carrying the most advanced nation on the earth on her shoulders.” “When she simply let’s go, what does she do? Who develops into she?”

Beyond the continuation of Riri’s journey in Ironheart, Marvel hasn’t said anything about whether a third Black Panther film or any related standalone movies or series will be released. Even yet, the superhero studio’s slate of films through 2026 leaves a small window of opportunity for Okoye’s potential future comeback.
