Kevin Smith will collaborate once more. Moose Jaws, a horror-comedy that has been in development since 2014, is finally coming to life, the filmmaker formally stated in a Q&A at GalaxyCon, according to a recent story from Fangoria.

Smith has previously made hints about Moose Jaws, suggesting that the film is based on the same plot as the 1975 classic Jaws but instead centers on a moose wreaking havoc and mayhem. He didn’t provide any additional information on the film’s production, but he did disclose that Jay & Silent Bob Reboot’s successful release served as the basis for its financing. According to Smith, Jay & Silent, Bob Reboot sold enough Blu-rays and DVDs to support the development of future Lionsgate projects.

About pitching the film, Smith told Fangoria:

“They were like, ‘Well, like what?’ And I said, ‘I’ve got this movie Clerks III that they’re in,’ they’re like, ‘Okay, what else?’ ‘I got this movie called Moose Jaws,’ and they were like, ‘What’s Moose Jaws?’ And I was like, ‘Moose Jaws is like Jaws but with a Moose instead of a shark.’ And they said, ‘What’s the budget on that?’ I was like, ‘About three million bucks,’ they’re like, ‘We’ll make four of them.’ So it looks like Moose Jaws is finally gonna happen.”

Moose Jaws has a compelling premise that might offer an intriguing take on the well-known Jaws tale, and it has the potential to be a memorable and enjoyable addition to Smith’s filmography. Smith is well known for his low-budget comedies like Clerks and Mallrats, which have grown to become cult classics over time. With the release of Clerks III earlier this year, he recently made a comeback to the Clerks franchise.

But he also has experience with the creature feature genre. In 2014, he directed Tusk, the first movie in Kevin Smith’s planned True North trilogy, a collection of three Canadian-set horror comedies. The final film of the trilogy, Moose Jaws, was never released because Yoga Hosers, which was slammed by reviewers and flopped at the box office, was released in 2016. Fans can now see Smith’s directing flair, which may result in a lot of hilarious scares for viewers when Moose Jaws inevitably makes its way to theatres in the future.
