The plot of the musical centres around a proprietor of a London pie business and a murderous barber. After being expelled by a dishonest court, Sweeney returns years later in search of his long-lost family and establishes an unexpected alliance with Mrs. Lovett, who operates a pie store below Sweeney’s former barbershop.

Eight Tony Awards were given to the original Broadway production in 1980, including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, and Best Direction for Hal Prince. The musical’s London debut took home the 1980 Best Musical Olivier Award.
