The Whale by Darren Aronofsky generated a lot of hype for the correct reasons. As Charlie, a chubby and reclusive English professor trying to patch fences with his estranged daughter Ellie, played by Sadie Sink, the film brought back Brenden Fraser to the big screen, where he gave a heartbreaking performance. The cast and director went into great detail about their roles in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

The Whale centers on Charlie, who suffers from guilt and is in grave danger of developing congestive heart failure. All he wants is to know that he has lived his life in some way that he can be proud of. His daughter re-connects with him as a result, and she consents on the condition that Charlie reworks an essay for school. This is Charlie’s “redemption story,” according to Fraser. When asked if her character is “good or evil,” Sink responded, “I don’t know, I think when I was filming I, definitely for the earlier parts, I had times like where I was like, Oh there’s some genuine, real darkness in her. You are aware of it, but in my opinion, it has just grown over time as a result of her intense suffering.

She further explains, “And I think she has no idea who she is, she’s very insecure, I think.” She divulges about Ellie’s relationship with her estranged father saying, it’s this game that she’s become really good at playing that’s kind of a challenge for Charlie, but the thing about him is that he’s able to kind of see past all of it and I don’t want to ensure her that there’s a part of herself that he sees so clearly that I think is good, I think there’s good in her.”

The Whale has received praise for its performances from both reviewers and fans. The script by author Samuel D. Hunter skillfully weaves together the many emotions of each character and demonstrates the grey zones in which we all operate. In addition to Fraser and Sink, the film also stars Ty Simpkins as Thomas, a devout Christian missionary, Samantha Morton as Mary, Charlie’s ex-wife, and Hong Chau as Liz, a nurse and Charlie’s best friend. The film received multiple standing ovations during its run at film festivals and earned Fraser accolades for Best Actor at the Critics’ Choice and Golden Globe Awards.
