Avatar: The Way of Water recently topped $2.054 billion at the global box office, surpassing Avengers: Infinity War to become the fifth highest-grossing movie of all time. The epic science fiction sequel doesn’t seem to be slowing down. The feat was accomplished immediately after news broke that the much-anticipated sequel had surpassed the $2 billion barrier, making it the sixth movie in history to do so and the third for director James Cameron, the first director in history to do so. The movie has now surpassed the popular Marvel Studios feature and is the most successful post-pandemic release.

The movie is expected to overtake Star Wars: The Force Awakens in the coming days and move up to the fourth position, where it will be followed by Titanic and another Cameron production. It would be interesting to see if the movie can top Titanic’s $2.194 billion, especially given that the 1997 movie will be re-released in February to mark its 25th anniversary. However, the film should continue to keep solid legs as it continues to march its way up the all-time list given the dearth of competition for the upcoming few weeks prior to the arrival of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

The movie has made $603 million domestically, which is now less than Top Gun: Maverick’s $718 million. However, the film is already outperforming Maverick, which earned $579 million on its 41st day of release. If the trend continues, Avatar: The Way of Water will probably surpass all other domestic releases of 2022 in the coming weeks in terms of revenue. The current box office total contrasts the front-loaded nature of other big blockbusters with the solid legs the movie has retained over the past few weeks following its December launch, which was followed by a domestic opening of $134 million.

With a third movie already finished and numerous more in the works, a lot was on the line for the franchise’s future. But it seems as though the 13 years of work have finally paid off. The movie recently received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Achievement in Visual Effects, Best Achievement in Production Design, Best Sound, and Best Motion Picture of the Year, in addition to its worldwide box office supremacy.

The son of Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaa), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton) will be given more attention in the upcoming movie, according to a recent announcement by director James Cameron. The movie will also feature the Ash People, a Na’vi clan that dwells in Pandora’s volcanic zones. Fans have a lot to look forward to over the next few years with so much planned for the franchise’s future.
