The Directors Guild of America (DGA) has announced the 2023 nominees for the DGA Awards in the film categories. The nominations for directors of theatrical features and directors making their feature film debut are honored on one of the shorter lists during awards season. Although there are no returning directors on the list, studio A24 is in first place with a total of two nominations, including Charlotte Wells’ After sun and the Daniels’ blockbuster Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Box office sensation Top: Gun Maverick, the prequel to the famous Tom Cruise film Top Gun, is leading the way in the category of theatrical releases. Along with The Banshees of Inisherin, Tár and the semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans also garnered nominations. The first-time category also recognized the directorial debuts of Murina, Happening, Saint-Omer, and Emily the Criminal. Even though they had already gotten nominations for awards like the Golden Globes, other well-known movies including Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, and James Cameron’s Avatar were not included. The Inspection rejected Elegance Bratton, a debut director, as well.

Despite the fact that numerous women have produced critically acclaimed films, there are sadly no female directors on the list. Women Talking by Sarah Polley and She Said by Maria Schrader are two standouts that would seem to be logical selections given that they were both critically acclaimed films. The Woman King, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, did well at the box office and earned positive reviews, making it a hot movie for awards season. Mamie Till-Mobley, the mother of Emmett Till, is the subject of Chinonye Chukwu’s biography Till. The movie swiftly established itself as one to watch out for. The absence of female filmmakers comes just after none were honored at the Golden Globes. As the Oscars get near, it’s still unclear whether women will garner more nominations.
