The fact that the Elvis Presley biography currently has eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Austin Butler, is a credit to Baz Luhrmann’s enormous amount of creative and production effort. This would be welcomed news for those who adored the biopic and the musical legend. Even more, though, exists for you to be thrilled about.

This Friday, January 27, 2023, a small number of theatres around the country will host a limited run of the Warner Bros. Pictures movie with Butler in the lead. The biopic is presently available to stream on HBO Max, but those who would like to watch it in a theatre will be able to do so. Elvis did well at the box office during its first theatrical run, earning $287 million. The movie’s success also saw it break new records, making it the second-highest-grossing musical biopic of all time and the highest-grossing non-franchise movie of 2022. Elvis became Luhrmann’s second-highest film globally and his biggest domestically thanks to its box office success.

Elvis, which Luhrmann and Sam Bromell wrote the screenplay for, covers more than 30 years of the legendary Presley. Examining his range of experiences—including love, tragedy, his extraordinary climb to fame, and the complicated relationship with manager Colonel Tom Parker—against the backdrop of America’s changing cultural landscape and the timeless music he gave the world. Best Picture, Best Actor in a Lead Role, Cinematography, Film Editing, Costume Design, Production Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Sound are among the categories for which the movie has been nominated at the Academy Awards.

President of Domestic Distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures, Jeff Goldstein, made the following announcement about the film’s return to theatres:

“Since its release in June, it has remained clear that Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Elvis’ has real staying power with audiences of all ages, much like Elvis Presley’s own enduring popularity. We congratulate Baz, Austin, and everyone involved in making ‘Elvis’ on their much-deserved nominations from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In light of this exciting news, we felt that fans of the film would appreciate another chance to celebrate this incredible cinematic achievement again by seeing it on the big screen.”

The movie, which had Butler in the starring role, also included Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis Presley’s manager. Alton Mason, Olivia DeJonge, Dacre Montgomery, Helen Thomson, Richard Roxburgh, and Chaydon Jay, who plays a preteen Elvis Presley, round out the group.
