Leonardo DiCaprio wasn’t certain he wanted the part of Jack. At the Golden Globes 2023 on Tuesday, filmmaker James Cameron revealed in an exclusive interview with a private news station that he had to persuade actor Leonardo DiCaprio, now 48, to accept the role that would ultimately help propel him to prominence.

“He didn’t want to do a leading man,” recalls Cameron. “I had to really twist his arm to be in the movie. He didn’t want to do it. He thought it was boring.”

The 68-year-old Canadian director claims that it was “only when I convinced him that it was genuinely a challenging assignment” that DiCaprio “took the part” of the tragic Jack.

“It didn’t surprise me, first of all, that he’s made a lot of authentic choices going forward,” Cameron adds. “And secondly, I never doubted his talent.”

Cameron recently told Deadline that he “can’t fathom that film” without its two main actors, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Twenty-five years later, Titanic is still one of the highest-grossing films ever filmed.

“I consider the Titanic pairing of Leonardo and Kate. Leo, I had to fight for him since the company didn’t want him “In an interview with the publication, the filmmaker discussed his career and his newest film, Avatar: The Way of Water.

“Kate really liked him,” the director said of DiCaprio. “And then Leonardo decided he didn’t want to make the movie. So then I had to talk him into it.”

In the interview, Cameron stated that if DiCaprio had chosen not to accept the role of Jack or if other circumstances surrounding the production had been different, Titanic “wouldn’t have been that film.”

“You think at any one of those places, if that had really kind of frayed apart, it would have been somebody else and it wouldn’t have been that film,” he told the outlet. “And I can’t imagine that film without him and without her.”

The movie is coming back to theatres to mark its 25th anniversary. A new teaser and poster have been released in celebration of the February release of Cameron’s historical romance epic.

The 1998 Academy Award-winning film Titanic will be presented in 3D 4K HDR with a high frame rate.

The movie, which was also scripted by Cameron, also stars Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Frances Fisher, Gloria Stuart, David Warner, Victor Garber, and Bill Paxton in addition to DiCaprio and Winslet, who is now 47.

“I spent a year researching because I wanted it to be as accurate as possible,” Cameron recently told the news of the film, for a Titanic special edition issue. “I said to the team, ‘Guys, I want it to be like we went back in a time machine and filmed what happened.’ ”
