Michael Shannon thinks the tragedy of “Rust” and he feels “horrible” for Alec Baldwin
The circumstances behind Alec Baldwin’s alleged involuntary manslaughter are discussed by Michael Shannon. The Bullet Train star discussed how actors should handle firearms on sets in a conversation with The Chicago Tribune. He said, “If your movie has firearms in it, that’s not the place to cut shortcuts.”
Shannon, 48, commented that Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed, who is also accused of two counts of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Halyna Hutchins on the set in October 2021, “obviously was not qualified for the position.” She wasn’t supposed to be there.
According to Shannon, “an actor’s job is not to be a firearms or weapons expert” on set. She added that “if it were up to the actor to determine whether a firearm is safe or not, you wouldn’t need an armorer in the first place.” SAG-AFTRA recently stated that “an actor’s job is not to be a firearms or weapons expert.”
He told the Tribune, “I have nothing but respect for them. Being an armorer is a hard, demanding profession.
Although it was unclear whether the actor was aware of the exact firearm procedures that took place prior to the fatal shooting, Shannon said, “With Rust, before the gun went into his hand, [Baldwin] should have seen with his own eyes there was nothing in it.”
According to Shannon, armorers must always inform actors on set whether the firearm they are passing over is empty or loaded with dummy or decoy ammunition.
He told the site, “You never settle for walking up to an actor and handing them the pistol without telling them what’s inside of it.” “Ever.”
“I’m not saying Alec is bad. I feel awful for the man “Shannon, who is not associated in Rust’s creation, continued. “An absolute nightmare. I’m so sorry for everyone involved with that production.”
However, he told the publication, “This is what happens when you lowball and cut corners and hire people who might not be competent and pay them next to nothing and make the movie on the cheap.”
The two-time Academy Award nominee also advised against actors ever “putting their finger in the trigger hole” of a gun “unless you’re going for a take.”
Baldwin claimed to have “not pulled the trigger” in a memorable December 2021 interview with George Stephanopoulos, but an FBI report published in August 2022 found that the trigger of the gun had to have been pushed.
Shannon described his experiences with firearms on set to the Tribune. “If you’re holding a firearm between takes, which you shouldn’t be, you point it towards the ground until somebody comes and grabs it from you,” Shannon said.
In the wake of the tragic Rust shooting, the actor stated that he believes the position of an on-set armorer “may become obsolete.”
“There’s a big push now to do [gunfire] in the post, you know, postproduction,” he told the outlet. “No more live firing on set, period. So you act like you’re firing a gun when you’re not. It’s called ‘acting.’ And it’s truly not worth dying for.”
Two of Gutierrez Reed’s attorneys stated in a statement following the announcement of the accusations last Thursday that the 25-year-charges old’s “are the consequence of a very poor investigation, and an erroneous grasp of the complete facts.”
Jason Bowles and Todd J. Bullion stated in a statement that they “want to expose the whole truth and believe Hannah will be exonerated of wrongdoing by a jury.”
