On a recent episode of the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, Octavia Spencer revealed that she “felt more racism when I first moved” to Los Angeles than she ever did in her southern homeland of Montgomery, Alabama.

“I think everywhere is heavy. Everywhere has its history,” explained the Oscar winner, 52. “I think everywhere has problems.”

She continued: “You can’t deny that Southern history is intense. It is. But what’s beautiful for me is that stuff preceded me. I was a child of the ’70s … As you grow older and the things that you can remember, that weren’t a part of my history. I learned about it. It’s not anything that I experienced.”

When Spencer first arrived in Los Angeles in the 1990s, she thought it would be an “open and liberal-thinking place,” but when she went shopping on Rodeo Drive, she said she was treated like an outlier. ”

“It is hilarious. She remarked, “It’s straight out of Pretty Woman. I remember going into a store and being followed. At least, that’s what I did when I first moved to [L.A.] You want to go to those historical locations, all of those famous places. I was first just wandering around, all excited, when I suddenly became aware that I was being followed. Simply put, it was unusual in that regard, Spencer continued.

The Truth Be Told actor said: “But it was glaringly clear.” She continued, “The odd thing is, after getting over that initial [cultural shock], I’ve not really necessarily experienced” it again.

Spencer noted the value of “spending meaningful time with relatives” and claimed she now has “a home there” in Alabama where she spends “weeks at a time.”

She told Ellen DeGeneres that the Spanish-style property she purchased in the Los Angeles suburb of Toluca Lake in 2013 is haunted by a spirit she refers to as her “I love him, because he sort of sorts out the nasty individuals who shouldn’t be there,” she continued. He sends them away.”
