Oscars: Date Set for March 2023 Ceremony and Other Key Events

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will undo the divisive decision to cut the Oscars telecast last year. The twenty-three awards, whose nominees were revealed today, will all be given out live and on-air this year. According to a Variety story, Academy CEO Bill Kramer has guaranteed that every award will be shown during the presentation.
Eight less significant awards, including Best Original Score, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Documentary Short, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Animated Short, Best Live Action Short, and Best Sound, were removed from the broadcast last year in an effort to combat the awards show’s steadily growing run time. Josh Brolin and Jason Momoa pre-recorded their award-giving ceremony, which was eventually spliced into the show. Although viewers of the Oscars program last year increased above those from 2021, they still fell short of pre-pandemic figures.
Kramer, who was appointed in June, stated that the Academy is in discussions with the cut categories on a regular basis “dedicated to producing a program that honors craftspeople, the humanities, the sciences, and the collaborative nature of filmmaking. This is very much in line with the Academy’s goal, and I have high hopes that we can put on a program that celebrates all aspects of filmmaking in a fun and interesting way.”
Many prominent Hollywood professionals, such as Guillermo del Toro, Denis Villeneuve, and Steven Spielberg, protested the exclusion of the so-called “below the line” categories (nominated for Best Director this year for The Fabelmans). Spielberg stated, “We create a family where each craft is equally as essential as the next as we all make movies together. I believe there is neither above nor below the line at the Academy Awards.
We’re all on the same team, bringing our best selves to bear to tell the finest stories we can. And that indicates to me that we should all sit down to dinner at 5 o’clock together. Even while a more newsworthy issue at the awards ceremony ultimately eclipsed the disagreement, Spielberg and his supporters undoubtedly prevailed.
The Oscars will be produced by Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner of White Cherry Entertainment, who will also serve as executive producers and showrunners. Weiss will serve as the show’s director for the ninth straight year.
