The Star Wars Holiday Special is one of the most notorious relics from a galaxy far, far away because of how harshly many fans lambasted it. A Disturbance in the Force, a new documentary that looks at “how and why the Holiday Special got filmed” will shortly make its world premiere at the 2019 SXSW, according to news
The spin-off, directed by Steve Binder, introduced fans to Boba Fett and was memorable because it took place between the events of the original movie and the at-the-time-unreleased sequel The Empire Strikes Back. Lucasfilm did not, however, replay the movie or ever formally distribute it on home video due to the fact that it had such a poor response. The special, which was previously only accessible through pirated VHS tapes, has now become more widely known by fans thanks to the internet, and parts of it have even been included in the canon of the main Star Wars franchise.
Following the events of the first movie, Chewbacca and Han Solo visit Kashyyyk, the home planet of the Wookiees, to celebrate “Life Day,” a holiday comparable to Christmas. Agents of the Galactic Empire, looking for Rebel Alliance members on the planet, are after them, though. Three members of Chewbacca’s family are also introduced in the episode along with Boba Fett: his father Itchy, his wife Malla, and his son Lumpy.
13 million people watched the movie when it debuted on CBS, but both reviewers and viewers blasted it. Many fans were unaware of it because it was never aired again, however, the internet does keep things alive! Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca, James Earl Jones as the voice of Darth Vader, Bea Arthur as Ackmena, Art Carney as Trader Saun Dann, and many more were among the original cast members who appeared in the holiday special.
Jeremy Coon and Steve Kozak are in charge of directing A Disturbance in the Force. Various celebrities will talk about various parts of creating the spin-off and the cultural phenomenon it has evolved into in the upcoming documentary. Seth Green, Weird Al Yankovic, Taran Killam, Gilbert Gottfried, Bonnie Burton, Paul Scheer, Bruce Vilanch, Lenny Ripps, Donny Osmond, and Miki Herman are just a few of the artists included in the film. Alongside Adam F. Goldberg and Kyle Newman, Coon and Kozak also act as producers.
The release date for A Disturbance in the Galaxy is currently unknown, but you can look at the plot summary and the Holiday Special itself by following the links below:
“In 1977, Star Wars became a cultural phenomenon that single-handedly revitalized a stagnant film industry, and forever changed how films were sold, made, and marketed. Movies would never be the same again. A year later, neither would television. In 1978, CBS aired the two-hour Star Wars Holiday Special during the week of Thanksgiving which was watched by 13 million people. It never re-aired. While some fans of the franchise are aware of this dark secret, this bizarre two hours of television still remains relatively unknown among the general public. Simply put, we will answer how and why the Holiday Special gets made.”
