  • The Hollywood Reporter has added to today’s earlier report that Amazon had commissioned acclaimed.
  • Her involvement is said to be connected to a larger contract she just renewed with Amazon.
  • Based on a comparable revival of the video game series, Alicia Vikander appeared in a reboot in 2018.

The Hollywood Reporter has added to today’s earlier report that Amazon had commissioned acclaimed author Phoebe Waller-Bridge to create a television adaptation of the popular video game series Tomb Raider, saying that the massive rights deal’ will also include at least one video game and a new Tomb Raider feature film.

In line with Marvel’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has seen stories interwoven through various formats, including film, television, games, and written media, the plan is to build out and expand upon a connected world of the Tomb Raider franchise with the television series, feature film, and video game – or games, depending on the success – all being interconnected.

Given the previous popularity of the brand and the release of the most recent Tomb Raider video game, additional entries in that series are thought to be likely. The article continues by stating that a person with knowledge of the transaction claimed it to be one of Amazon’s greatest franchise commitments following their purchase of the Lord of the Rings brand rights, for which they are estimated to have spent more than $250 million. The Rings of Power, a multi-season show that is presently airing, was covered under that agreement, and spinoffs of the show are also in development.

Because the multi-talented performer is a major admirer of the Tomb Raider franchise and was keen to be engaged in its production for television, Waller-Bridge has been hired to write the script for the television version. Her involvement is said to be connected to a larger contract she just renewed with Amazon.

This movie adaptation would be the third attempt to bring the console game series to the big screen, following two critically panned films from the early 2000s that starred Angelina Jolie as an overtly glamorous Lara Croft, based on the character’s more “rounded” appearance in the early PlayStation video games. Based on a comparable revival of the video game series, Alicia Vikander appeared in a reboot in 2018.

Based on a game more akin to critically acclaimed titles like Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series, that film featured a rough and realistic portrayal of the character. However, the Vikander movie’s $106 million budget, which did not include marketing expenses, could not reach break-even. Due to the initially slightly more favorable critical reception of the movie, a sequel was initially planned, with Vikander attached to return in her part. That follow-up, however, was shelved in 2022 after MGM’s cinematic rights to the series ran out.
