Alexander Payne comedy movie “The Holdovers” release date revealed
The Holdovers, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alexander Payne and starring Paul Giamatti, who was also a part of the 2004 Oscar-winning film sideways, has a release date. Focus Features has announced that The Holdovers will debut in theatres on November 10 as a limited release before going on general distribution on November 22 in time for Thanksgiving.
After the 2017 release of his science-fiction comedy film Downsizing, starring Matt Damon, Payne has been missing in action. The two-time Oscar winner is hoping to make a splash with The Holdovers, which is being directed by his dependable buddy Giamatti. After working together on Sideways, when Giamatti’s performance unquestionably improved the movie as a whole, Payne developed a fondness for the actor. After receiving several nominations, Payne’s work earned him his first Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Giamatti will be playing a character in The Holdovers that Payne specifically created for the actor out of his desire to work with him again.
Giamatti will be portrayed by The Holdovers as a vile history teacher at a prestigious New England prep school. The school administration chose him to stay on campus to safeguard the welfare of pupils who are unable to travel home for the Christmas break despite his dislike from both coworkers and fellow students.
But, given that his poor people skills transcend over into his personal life, it is unlikely that the history teacher has anything better planned for Christmas. However, the apparent punishment ends up benefiting everyone because Giamatti’s character takes advantage of the chance to connect with Angus (Dominic Sessa), a charismatic but bright student, and Mary (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), the school’s head cook and a grieving Black woman who lost her son in Vietnam.
Payne was inspired to make the movie after seeing a 1930s French film with a boarding school setting. His adaptation will also take place in the 1970s and be a period piece. The movie’s screenplay was developed in part by David Hemingson, who will also produce it with Mark Johnson and Bill Block. Chris Stinson, Tom Williams, Andrew Golov, and Thom Zadra are executive producers.
The Holdovers is anticipated to be an awards candidate, just like many other Payne works have been. Focus Features made a wise decision by scheduling the movie’s release over Thanksgiving weekend given that family movies frequently receive favorable reviews during the holiday. Payne is eager to repeat the box office success of his previous collaboration with Giamatti, The Holdovers, which brought in over $100 million against a modest $16 million budget. It won’t be simple, though, since huge releases like Disney’s animated feature wish, Universal’s third Trolls movie, and the eagerly awaited Hunger Games prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, will all be released around this Thanksgiving frame.
