Lizzo wins record of the year at the 2023 Grammy awards
At the 2023 Grammy Awards on Sunday, Lizzo won the prestigious Record of the Year award, and it was “About Damn Time!”
As she joyfully walked the stage to accept the honor, the singer said, “Let me share a fact with you. Adele and I are having fun together, simply being silly and supporting our pals. This night is fantastic and so unanticipated.”
The late musician Prince was then honored by Lizzo. “I made the decision to devote my life to creating uplifting music after Prince passed away. What’s wrong with you, I responded, “I don’t care if my optimism bothers you.” “She laughed as she said.
“Positive and feel good music wasn’t mainstream at that point and I felt very misunderstood,” she continued. “I felt on the outside looking in, but I stayed true to myself because I wanted to make the world a better place. So I had to be that change to be a better place. And now, I look around and there’s all these songs about loving our body and being comfortable in our skin and feeling f—ing good and I’m just so proud to be a part of it!”
“Just stay true to yourself,” Lizzo, 34, advised anyone who might feel “on the outside looking in,” as she did. “I assure you, you will find people, attract people in your life who believe in you and support you.”
Lizzo thanked her family before pausing to extend a special shout-out to Beyoncé.
The Renaissance superstar smiled back at her as she continued, “In the fifth grade, I skipped school to attend you play. (It was literature, I did well!) My sister got me out of school.
“You changed my life,” she continued. “You sang that gospel medley and the way you made me feel… I was like, i want to make people feel this way with my music, so thank you so much.”
She received a standing ovation from the audience after her address, and host Trevor Noah remarked, “They should give out a Grammy for greatest speech!”
Record of the Year is one of the major four Grammy categories that honors the performing artist for a single song that was either released or gained popularity during the eligibility period for the awards show, which was from October 1, 2021, through September 30, 2022.
The first song from Lizzo’s Special album, “About Damn Time,” was released in April 2022 and peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. After the song was released, the 34-year-old singer-songwriter discussed its inspiration with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe.
“About Damn Time’ can lead into so many conversations,” said Lizzo at the time. “It’s about damn time I feel better, it’s about damn time we get out of this pandemic. It’s about damn time we get the first Black female Supreme Court Justice. There’s so many things. It’s about damn time we popped the champagne. It’s about damn time the tequila got here.”
The songs “As It Was” by Harry Styles, “Bad Habit” by Steve Lacy, and others were also nominated in this category. “Break My Soul,” a song by Beyoncé “Don’t Shut Me Down” by ABBA, “Easy on Me” by Adele “Good Morning Gorgeous” by Mary J. Blige, “The Heart Part 5” by Kendrick Lamar, “Woman” by Doja Cat, and “You and Me on the Rock” by Brandi Carlile and Lucius are some other songs worth listening to.
Trevor Noah is the host of the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, which are broadcast and streamed live from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
