Stephen King’s collection of work has inspired and continues to inspire filmmakers, as evidenced by the abundance of adaptations that can be found in the cinematic world. We recently learned via Variety that one of the prolific author’s short pieces is being adapted for the first time in a foreign language, demonstrating King’s extensive and enduring influence. According to the rumor, Mena Massoud, who starred in Aladdin, is a member of the production group for the The Last King film in the Farsi language.

The Doctor’s Case, one of King’s lesser-known thriller short tales, served as the inspiration for The Last King. King’s Sherlock Holmes murder mystery, The Doctor’s Case, features a dead father in a locked room with only his family members as potential suspects. The adaptation will be the first Stephen King story to be adapted in Iran. According to Variety, the movie is set in Iran and represents the nation’s ongoing “Woman, Life, Freedom” revolution, which has frequently made international news as Iranian women continue to push for gender equality and oppose the government.

A wholly Iranian ensemble will appear in The Last King, featuring Tara Grammy, Peter Banifaz, Nazanin Nour, Tara Grammy, Iranian-American comic Maz Jobrani, Sheila Ommi from Tehran on Apple TV, Marshall Manesh, Shiva Negar (The Cleaning Lady), and Sheila Ommi. In order to bridge the gap between Hollywood and the Middle East and North Africa, Massoud will be producing the movie under the auspices of Press Play Productions, the production company he co-founded with business partner Ali Mashayekhi. Mashayekhi had acquired the book’s rights through King’s Dollar Baby initiative, in which the writer offers his works for a $1 charge to budding theatre producers, students, and filmmakers.

The Doctor’s Case by Stephen King, which was released in 1987, will be adapted into a movie for the second time with The Last King. The first version of the story was in a 2018 independent Canadian film of the same name from director James Douglas. The most recent information follows the declaration that J.J. Abrams is now adapting King’s book Billy Summers.

In an effort to meet the growing need for various tales from the MENA region, especially as leading streaming services have expanded to the area, Massoud and Mashayekhi joined together to form Press Play Productions. The company’s most recent lineup of films also includes Spaceman, In Broad Daylight, and Evolving Vegan in addition to The Last King.

“In the 1970s, Egypt was the third-largest film industry in the world and continues to cultivate a rich and thriving industry for the whole region,” Massoud said. ““Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, the UAE, and now Saudi Arabia are all breeding grounds for some of the best content in and around the African continent. Press Play will be a driving force in bringing those stories to the West. We have some really exciting projects releasing this year and in the pipeline, and I’m thrilled to be bridging the gap between the MENA region and Hollywood.”
