The Academy won’t punish Andrea Riseborough for the campaign scandal

Andrea Riseborough can relax this evening knowing that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ investigation will not result in the cancellation of her nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role. The Academy stated on Tuesday afternoon through their CEO Bill Kramer that those who fought for her to be recognized by the Academy for her portrayal of Leslie, in which she played a woman spiraling out of control into alcoholism, will also not be pursued. Kramer did say, however, that the Academy would be looking into Riseborough’s and her team’s methods further in the future in case they were applied by other nominees.

After their 54-member board of governors met earlier on Tuesday for their regularly scheduled monthly meeting, where an internal evaluation of the Riseborough campaign had been high on the agenda for the day, the Academy made their decision. The discussion about her unconventional candidature strategy, which caused amazement and even some mockery at last week’s nomination announcement, served as the catalyst for the review.

Leslie opened to rave reviews for Riseborough’s performance, but it received so little attention — it only made $27,322 in its first year — that many Academy members were unaware of it before the campaign. The likes of Susan Sarandon, Helen Hunt, Zooey Deschanel, Mira Sorvino, Constance Zimmer, Rosie O’Donnell, Alan Cumming, Edward Norton, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Minnie Driver, Gwyneth Paltrow, Amy Adams, Kate Winslet took it upon themselves to personally support Riseborough, hosting events, screenings, luncheons, and promoting her performance via social media.

Kramer responds to the Riseborough ruling and says that

“The Academy started looking at the movie’s promotional strategies after worries about the TO LESLIE awards campaign arose last week. The Academy has found that the alleged action does not warrant the revocation of the film’s candidature. But we did come across social media and outreach campaigning strategies that raised questions. With the accountable parties directly, these strategies are being discussed”.

“As these are the key values of the Academy, “the goal of the Academy’s campaign regulations is to maintain a fair and ethical awards process. After reviewing the rules, it is clear that some of them need to be defined in order to improve the framework for impartial, respectful advocacy. These adjustments will be made following this awards cycle, and our members will be informed of them. The Academy aspires to foster a setting in which votes are purely determined by the creative and technical merits of the films and accomplishments that are eligible”.
