The film business has been thanking Tom Cruise for giving it a second chance with his movie Top Gun: Maverick for the past few months, making him the talk of the town. Maverick’s record-breaking box office success, much of which is attributable to Cruise standing his ground and adamantly refusing to let it be sold to a streamer during the pandemic, may have saved the struggling theatrical industry, according to Steven Spielberg, who recently told Cruise at the Oscar nominee’s luncheon. Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, which hits theatres in a few months, is the next major motion picture Cruise is preparing to release.

The celebrity visited Jimmy Kimmel Live! Intended to serve two purposes: to softly commence the Mission: Impossible 7 promotional tour while also promoting Maverick for one final time before the Oscars. Beyond Cruise’s admission that he, too, is eager to see Cocaine Bear, the conversation’s high point was him discussing the dangerous motorbike stunt that was tantalizingly promised in the movie’s debut teaser and again in a behind-the-scenes documentary.

As he described the difficulties of the stunt to an attentive audience, Cruise delivered commentary over the footage we saw in that featurette. They fired “eight times,” he claimed.

In the feat, Cruise rides a motorcycle off a cliff, falls to the ground free, and then opens his parachute just in time. He said that before he hits the earth, he has “six seconds to open the parachute.” Over the video of him leaving the ramp, Cruise remarked that they needed to make sure he wasn’t in any way connected to the bike. His shoelaces were taped as well. He also considered the mischief he used to get into as a kid, which helped him come to the conclusion that this is what he wanted to do for a job. According to him:

“I simply use every available resource and tool to entertain the audience. I used to ride my bike down the hill as quickly as I could, hit the ramp, and run over trash cans even when I was a young child after stealing lumber from the junkyard. I wasn’t employed. The following few days were spent in the hospital after I went through it, cut the wood in half, and went through the trash cans.

The Daredevil Image of Tom Cruise Exists Before Him

With each new Mission: Impossible film, Cruise has established a reputation for pulling off a sequence of dramatic feats that only get more intense. With the last two installments of the franchise, we’ve already caught a taste of what he has in store for us. The jaw-dropping BASE jump scene and an amazing action scenario on a vintage train were promised in the first Mission: Impossible 7 video. There will reportedly be a scene in the eighth film where Cruise pilots a biplane from World War II.

But in addition to his image as a daredevil, Cruise has made a name for himself as one of the most ardent supporters of the theatre. He was successful in persuading Paramount to delay selling Maverick to streaming services during the pandemic, and it paid off because the movie finally made close to $1.5 billion at international box offices. When the budget for Mission: Impossible 7 reportedly increased to about $300 million, it gave him previously unheard-of clout with the studio.

Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Cary Elwes, and Esai Morales are all featured in M:I 7. The movie is scheduled to be released on July 14, 2023, while Mission: Impossible 8 will hit theatres on June 28, 2024.
