Creed III earns $12 million at global box office in its third weekend
Creed III is an epic victory for Michael B. Jordan's directorial debut....
If there was ever any doubt, Creed III is a live example that the Rocky Balboa film series is still capable of triumphing 47 years later. The sports drama made $12 million across 75 markets after another successful weekend at the movie office. This takes the movie’s total worldwide box office to an impressive $224.3 million, with $96.6 million coming from foreign countries. The movie has destroyed the previous iterations of the spin-off series, despite a 50% drop off in attendance during its third week in theatres. The first installment of the new story, Creed, made a total of $173.5 million worldwide, while Creed II wrapped up its run with a total of $213.5 million.
The movie has exceeded its rumored $75 million budget, which can only be characterized as an epic victory for Michael B. Jordan’s directorial debut. With its updated interpretation of Rocky’s resiliency adage, “It ain’t about how hard you hit, it’s about how you can get stuck and keep moving forward,” Creed III undoubtedly won over reviewers and viewers alike. In the movie, Adonis Creed (Jordan), who has just retired, is at the height of his fame and prosperity until his boyhood best friend Damian Anderson (Jonathan Majors), who is now consumed by retaliation, threatens to upend his life after serving a significant prison term.
Jordan’s approach instead bravely confronts harsher issues of remorse, forgiveness, and pain rather than choosing to compete with the underdog themes that are widely discussed throughout the remaining chapters. With the world outside the theatre reflecting a similar temperature, this has in many ways made Creed III even timelier for its day, which is precisely what Rocky did so brilliantly during its own time.
In fact, Jordan has made a point of recognizing the depth that he intentionally gives his characters. Jordan said in an IMAX featurette, “Creed 3 is not just your ordinary boxing movie. “We really wanted to capitalize on the character’s emotional journey, put it in the ring, and have it pay off in a physical sense,” the author said. Jordan’s vision clearly struck a chord with viewers as seen by the film’s impressive 96% Rotten Tomatoes audience rating.
Jordan has provided plenty of potential for growth and expansion, something that is almost likely on the table now that the franchise has new legs. After a dominant start, Jordan allegedly met with Amazon to talk about the possibilities for a larger “Creed-verse,” according to Deadline. A number of potential spin-offs for both the big and small screens were also discussed.
