With its unapologetically harmonic mix of powerful action sequences and audacious imagination, S S Rajamouli’s RRR surely made a roar on the world stage. The movie follows liberation heroes Komaram Bheem (NT Rama Rao Jr.) and Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan) as they make their way to pre-independence India to fight British occupiers. The story of the two real-life rebels is boosted with an epic fantasy twist to up the ante.

The Indian epic made a huge international sensation, but what is most remarkable is that despite its daring stunt choreography, it only received one Academy Award nomination. The one nomination it did receive was for Best Song for the popular song “Naatu Naatu,” which will now be played during the 2019 Oscars ceremony.

Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, the original singers, will perform the song at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. It was penned by Chandrabose and composed by M. M. Keeravaani. The two leads burst into a series of electrifying dance moves in the video for the upbeat song, which has turned into something of an anthem for the movie. The choreographer Prem Rakshith created the moves. It’s not surprising that the show has received over 122 million YouTube views.

In addition to “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick, “This Is A Life” from Everything Everywhere All At Once, and “Applause” from Tell It Like A Woman, “Naatu Naatu” will be up against a reel of top Hollywood soundtracks in the competition.

The Oscars have drawn criticism for leaving RRR out of the Best Picture and Best Director categories despite its acknowledgement. This is largely because the movie not only pushed the envelope in terms of action but also expertly incorporated themes that are relevant to everyone. The fundamental ideas of good against evil, sacrifice, genuine companionship, and revolt for the greater good are among them. Given that an Indian project that has received widespread praise from critics and audiences throughout the world has largely been ignored, the snubs have unavoidably raised concerns about underlying attitudes towards diversity at the awards.

Awards are usually a sign of accomplishment, but they don’t really capture the significance of a movie like RRR. It is clear that the movie has left its mark given its approximately $160M in worldwide box office receipts and a stellar 94% on Rotten Tomatoes’ audience score meter. RRR has, at the very least, made significant progress towards shattering the glass ceiling for the upcoming global endeavor that will shock the globe.
