The DC Extended Universe is undergoing a behind-the-scenes recalibration at DC Studios, and audiences are keenly aware of this. But, because they have prepared themselves for what the DCEU will be like, in the coming years, they no longer feel the need to invest in the past. And this week’s Shazam! is doing well at the box office. Wrath of the Gods, which is significantly underperforming is already has low expectations. The superhero sequel is anticipating a disappointing and possibly series-low opening weekend of just $30 million with just $11.7 million on Friday, including $3.4 million in Thursday previews.

The sequel to the generally well-received 2019 movie Shazam!, titled Fury of the Gods, was projected to earn $35 million in its first three days, which would have been a big decline from the $53.5 million opening weekend of the original movie. In comparison to its projected $100 million budget, Shazam! Completed its run with $366 million globally, including $140 million from home audiences and $225 million from foreign markets. According to reports, the sequel cost over $125 million. Fury of the Gods is expected to have the lowest opening in the history of the DC Extended Universe, excluding mid-pandemic releases The Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman 1984.

Fury of the Gods, the 12th installment in the troubled franchise and the first since director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran were brought on board to change the course of the series, stars Zachary Levi as the titular superhero. The movie was originally scheduled for a December release by Warner Bros., but it was postponed to avoid competing with Avatar: The Way of Water. Yet, it is currently being struck by enduring successes like Scream VI and Creed III. The film’s underwhelming opening came only a few weeks after Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumia, a rival Marvel release, also struggled at the box office. Shazam and Ant-Man both have equal standing in their own franchises as characters.

Scream VI will fall to second place with an estimated $18 million after smashing expectations with a $44 million opening weekend. The horror sequel’s second Friday revenue of $5.1 million brought its overall domestic revenue to $63 million. This weekend, the movie will surpass the $100 million mark globally. In contrast, the fifth Scream movie from the previous year’s global box office total was $137 million.

On its third Friday, Creed III earned $4.3 million, moving it up to the third place. The third installment in the Rocky offshoot series, which earned $59 million in its opening weekend, drastically outperformed Scream VI. The movie is anticipated to gross $16 million this weekend, bringing its overall domestic gross to a little under $130 million. By Sunday, Creed III hopes to surpass $200 million worldwide.

Disney’s Ant-Man 2 and Sony’s science fiction dinosaur movie 65 took fourth and fifth places, respectively. While Ant-Man 2 made $1.1 million for a domestic total of $202 million, 65 made $1.5 million for a running domestic total of $18 million on its second Friday. With $452 million globally so far, the picture will not pass any of its predecessors — Ant-Man ($519 million) and Ant-Man and the Wasp ($622 million) — at the global box office.
