The cast of “Clueless” remembers the late Brittany Murphy: “She Was So Awesome”

Castmates from the Clueless movie Brittany Murphy are recalling the late actress and how “brilliant” she was. Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Breckin Meyer, and Elisa Donovan discussed their experience working with Murphy on the legendary 1995 comedy at their reunion panel at 90s Con on Sunday.

Silverstone recalled Brittany’s entry and remarked, “I remember Brittany coming in, and she was so great.”

In December 2009, Murphy passed away from pneumonia, anemia, and “multiple drug intoxication” brought on by prescription and OTC drugs. She was 32 years old.

Meyer reflected on their audition together and said he was relieved to see a familiar face when they were going up for the roles. Murphy’s Tai Frasier ends up dating Meyer’s Travis Birkenstock.

In a few things, “Brittany and I played boyfriend and girlfriend,” he said. Hence, it was convenient for me to audition since, whenever you do it with a familiar face, you can just think, “One box I could tick. It was really nice, then. Due to financial constraints rather than for fun, I skateboarded to the audition. Skateboarding from North Hollywood to Hollywood, where the studio is located, is a fairly long [journey], so I arrived dirty, greasy, and nasty.

“And it came down to my best buddy Seth Green and his curiously enough then-girlfriend Alanna Ubach. Britt and I had the option of them, so it was really just one or the other.”

Meyer reflected himself as he watched Brittany try out: “If you don’t make the movie with her, don’t make the movie, I don’t know if I’ll get the part to say, adding: “She’s that great. Was she.”

Meyer claimed that because of her brilliance, he often wonders “what she’d be doing now.”

He clarified, “I consider stuff like [how] they’re filming the movie Wicked now and I think Brittany could sing like nobody’s business. When I hear about that, I imagine Brittany would be crushing it right now. The amazing work she will undertake is not visible to us.”

Murphy’s career, which included the movies 8 Mile, Just Married, Uptown Girls, Don’t Say a Word, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Riding in Cars with Guys, Girl, Interrupted, and Sin City, began with the big-screen Hollywood production Clueless.

In a June 2021 interview with PEOPLE, 52-year-old Donovan described Murphy as “a really sweet lady” and described the loss of her friend as “quite heartbreaking.”

“She reminds me of a hummingbird every time. She was merely a really gifted young woman with a wonderful spirit “the author of Wake Me When You Leave was added.

The previous year, Silverstone, 46, recalled the Clueless audition process and shared her opinion that Murphy, although not like Tai Frasier in real life, was the ideal choice for the role.

“She just seemed perfect for the role, in my opinion. I don’t recall how many females auditioned for Tai that day, and I’m not sure if I saw any other girls or simply her, but I do recall Brittany as being incredibly cute “referring to their initial encounter with Murphy.
