Why Goldie Hawn reveals the reason why she didn’t attend the Oscars
In 1970, Goldie Hawn won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, and she still regrets missing the ceremony. “Never did I dress up. I was never able to accept the prize “In a fresh cover story for Variety that was released on Wednesday in advance of this Sunday’s 95th Academy Awards ceremony, Hawn, 77, revealed this.
Hawn, who won for her performance in 1969’s Cactus Flower, continued, “I regret it. It’s something that, as I reflect back, I think, “It would have been fantastic to have been able to accomplish that.”
Hawn informed the publication that she was in London filming the movie there’s a Girl in My Soup, which prevented her from attending the ceremony. Prior to receiving an early-morning phone call and “having a good cry,” she claimed she “forgot” the award was on television that night and had no idea she had won it.
“Later, at around four in the morning, a phone call startled me up. He said, “Well, congrats, you got it,” in a man’s voice “she recalled. “You won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress,” I got what?
Even after hearing Jimmy Kimmel, this year’s Oscars host, tell her that Fred Astaire proclaimed her name when she won, the actress revealed to the publication that she had never watched the film of the moment she won before. At the time, the award was accepted on Hawn’s behalf by Raquel Welch, who passed away last month at age 82.
“I then said, “Fred Astaire?” He is my hero “stated Hawn. “And I was unaware that he had called my name. The moment I actually saw it, I started to cry.”
Welch declared at the stage that year, “I’m grateful. It’s a joy to accept this award for her. She is filming in London, so she couldn’t be here. But I’m confident that she would also want to express her gratitude to Mike Frankovich, Gene Saks, Walter Matthau, and Ingrid Bergman. And I believe it’s fantastic for her. I’m grateful.”
Catherine Burns (for Last Summer), Dyan Cannon (for Bob, Carol, Ted, and Alice), Sylvia Miles (for Midnight Cowboy), and Susannah York (for They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?) were the other nominees in that category.
Hawn, who was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar in 1981 for her performance in Private Benjamin, revealed to Variety that she keeps her Oscar trophy in her bedroom closet. I don’t like to brag, so I kind of keep those things hidden, she said.
She continued by saying that neither she nor her longtime companion Kurt Russell considers themselves to be movie stars.
“Kurt and I have a lot in common. He doesn’t consider himself a movie star. I don’t either, “Hawn remarked. “Not one of our walks around thinking about that stuff.”
On Sunday, March 12, the 95th Academy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
