Muneeb Butt addresses the ‘Sar-e-Rah’ controversy with Maria B

In just six episodes, the drama series “Sar e Rah” delivered a number of important lessons. Every character was distinct, but Muneeb Butt‘s portrayal of Sarang stood out and drew the audience in. Yet, his identity as an intersex person generated a great deal of controversy.

Maria B, a well-known fashion designer, was one of the drama’s most outspoken critics. She uploaded a clip of the show and accused it of having a hidden goal to support transgender people in Pakistan. On social media, a specific scene starring Nabeel Zafar and young Sarang attracted a lot of criticism.

Butt withheld comment on the preceding debate and merely made it clear that Sarang was an intersex person rather than a trans person. He has now responded to Maria B’s allegations that the drama had a hidden goal and explained his motivations for playing the part.

Being a practising Muslim, Muneeb declared that he would not work for any agenda. He clarified that if the character had any flaws, he would not have brought them up, and neither would his family or the general public have tolerated them. In his reply, Muneeb adds that he took on the character of Sarang because he thought the story was real and needed to be conveyed.

Butt’s most recent work includes Yeh Na Thi Hamari Qismat, Wedding Virus, Baddua, Mast Mohabbat, Made for China, and Mujhay Vida Kar.
