Deep in trouble  – Geo’s cybercrime team exposed

Broadcasting giant GEO Network’s cybercrime cell has been involved in a defamation issue. As per a report from social media platform Twitter, the cybercrime team has been found creating fake Twitter IDs through their IP address, which was then used to launch defamation campaigns against a number of opponents on different social media platforms and different forums.

The central accused party involved in the matter is Azhar Abbas, Geo Network’s Director. According to reports, Azhar Abbas was given the responsibility of leading the entire cybercrime operation. Its most high-profile targets include Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan, among many others.

This incident has sparked massive outrage on both social media as well as the general public. Twitter received a large number of complaints about the material and narratives that the GEO News was spreading, which included hate speech, propaganda, and other wrong practices.

All these accounts were found bashing and trolling any posts or opinions that went against GEO TV stances and narratives. These accounts used hashtags that ridiculed and defamed different media personalities such as Mubasher Lucman and major political parties such as the PTI.

It is extremely disappointing and disturbing to see major media outlets involved in such negative tactics to push their own narratives and opinions, at the expense of others. These outlets must understand the consequences of such actions and fully accept their wrongdoings.
