GEO News proves to be traitors as they hire Indian Judges
Social media bashed GEO News show for choosing Bollywood music director Shankar Mahadevan and singer Shweta Pandit as show judges. Pakistanis tried to use the power of social media to put pressure on the local media network to cancel the singing competition based on the same reasons.
The hashtag #GeoBetraysYetAgain gathered a lot of traction, with many calling GEO TV traitors. The trend #GeoBetraysYetAgain was also trending on twitter and people showed their anger against GEO TV. It was rather a publicity stunt for getting a rating.
The campaign came after many different events in India involving Pakistanis who were interrupted by the right-wing group Shiv Sena. A graphic that many users were sharing read “Pakistanis do not want to see those who are killing Muslims for eating meat and GEO management is showing entertainment programs with an Indian agenda”.
The sentiment was also picked up by the then opposition leader Sheikh Rashid Ahmad, who retweeted some of the comments.
Many users even asked about where the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) was in such a scenario. The regulatory body possesses the power to either completely shut down a channel or impose heavy fines under what some commentators describe as draconian powers.
